Creativity Lost

There was a time when Hollywood was a source of creativity and inspiration. Characters, stories, settings and visuals so engrossing that they would bleed into other media and avenues and inspire content creation in those areas.

But sadly, Hollywood has lost that Midas touch. Movies are either adaptations from other mediums or reboots or retelling of older movies and stories. Relying mostly on the feeling of nostalgia to drag people into the cinema seats.

Take the last "normal" year that we had seen, 2019, the top ten grossing movies were as follows:

Highest-grossing films of 2019

1Avengers: EndgameDisney$2,798,800,564

Of the above 4 were Comic Book franchise, 2 were reboots / retellings and 4 were direct sequels to already established movies. Not a single movie was a fresh new IP (Intellectual Property).

The last new IP that I remember becoming popular was the Matrix which was back in 1999.

I remember the days of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, stories and characters so engaging and entertaining that they were used as base to create new lines of comic books, stories and video games.

We as audience are partly to be blamed for this stagnation of creativity. We continue to patronize these movies by forking up money for the tickets. Not demanding better and newer content to be created and continue to be satisfied with the same material being regurgitated in a shinier and glossier form.
